Toshiba launches optocoupler with built-in protection for medium and high current IGBT/MOSFET

Shanghai, China, March 10, 2020 – Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation (“Toshiba”) today announced the launch of the “TLP5231”, a new type of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) and Pre-drive optocouplers for MOSFETs for industrial inverters and photovoltaic (PV) power conditioning systems.This new pre-driven optocoupler has multiple functions built in[1], which includes overcurrent detection by monitoring the collector voltage. Products start shipping today.

The new pre-driver optocouplers use external P-channel and N-channel complementary MOSFETs as buffers to control medium and high current IGBTs and MOSFETs.

current products[2]A snubber circuit composed of bipolar transistors is required to achieve current amplification, which consumes base current during operation. The new product is able to use an external complementary MOSFET buffer, consuming current only when the gate of the buffer MOSFET is charging or discharging, helping to reduce power consumption.

By changing the size of the external complementary MOSFET buffers, the TLP5231 is able to provide the required gate current for various IGBTs and MOSFETs. The configuration of TLP5231, MOSFET buffer, and IGBT/MOSFET can be used as a platform to meet the power requirements of the system, thereby simplifying the design.

Other features include the use of another external N-channel MOSFET to control the “gate soft turn-off time” after VCE(sat) overcurrent is detected; in addition to being able to detect VCE(sat) by monitoring the collector voltage, And UVLO[3]Detect and output any fault signal to the primary side.These existing products[2]New features that are not available allow the TLP5231 to help users design gate drive circuits more easily.
