The SCM1212A control Chips (Figure 1) can be combined with a transformer and effectively used in DC-DC power supplies for industrial control, communications and instrumentation equipment. They can also be used to realize TTL/CMOS (transistor-to-transistor logic/ complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) to Controlled Area Network (CAN) bus differential output level conversion to meet reduced weight and space limitations in industrial communication devices as well as automotive design.
A characteristic of these fixed input, push-pull control devices is that they are efficient and can be easily scaled to high power applications where reliability is critical.
The ≤1W SCM1212A devices can operate normally at a low input voltage of 4.5V and will not be damaged under the impact of a high input voltage of 40V.
In addition to a wide input range of 4.5V to 8V the devices have a wide junction temperature range of–40 to +125°C.They also integrate many protection features, i.e. a soft-start feature to minimize in-rush current at start up; output short-circuit protection and over-temperature protection to effectively improve product reliability.
The soft start function ensures normal start up at full load under Constant Current (CC) load mode. The output short circuit protection is consistent and not affected by high and low temperature test conditions, for reliable operation. The over temperature protection exceeds the specified temperature range. The SCM1212A automatically enters a sleep state and resumes automatically when the temperature drops to a pre-set value.
The SCM1212A is supplied in an SOT23-5 package and is functionally the same as Mornsun’s SCM1201A which is provided in an SOT23-6 package, to meet the market’s demand for different pin packages.

Used with the Mornsun TBB05xx-1T series (Figure 2) matched transformer, which can be ≤4mm in height, they can be used to develop very low profile designs for space-constrained automotive or industrial applications.

A reference design uses the 4.5-5.5VDC input, 5VDC/1W output, isolated DC-DC power supply based on the SCM1212ATA and TTB0505-1T transformer (Figure 3), and can be applied to varied end applications, for example, industrial control, communication, instrumentation and utilities. The circuit solution takes the SCM1212ARA’s push-pull circuit topology, control IC, optimizing its simple external circuits and cost-effectiveness. The soft start function, which avoids damage due to the high current during startup, so the converter can startup with full load in CC mode. The SCM1212ATA’s integrated output short-circuit protection and over-temperature protection functions greatly improve the reliability of the system.
