Renesas Electronics Group (TSE: 6723), a global supplier of semiconductor solutions, today announced two new dual-polarization millimeter-wave devices, the F5288 and F5268 ICs, to expand its 5G beamformer IC product family. The new products are optimized for 5G and broadband wireless applications with a 2 x 2 antenna architecture for superior performance in the n257, n258 and n261 frequency bands. The highly integrated F5288 and F5268 transmitter/receiver (8T8R) chipsets feature the industry’s highest silicon-based Tx output power in a small 5.1mm x 5.1mm BGA package—over 15.5dBm of linear output power per channel ( Note 1). Through this combination, Renesas solutions enable cost-effective radio designs that extend the signal for WAN, small cells, and macro cells, as well as wireless infrastructure for CPE, fixed wireless access (FWA) nodes, and a variety of other applications coverage.
3rd Generation 5G mmWave Beamformer with Superior Tx Output Power
The new F5288 and F5268 ICs feature a unique Dynamic Array Power (DAP) technology that operates efficiently over a programmable linear output power range of 10 to 16dBm, making it easier for third-generation ICs to meet the demands of a variety of mobile and fixed wireless applications. output power level requirements. This flexibility allows communications customers to save design time by simply fine-tuning their antenna array designs for different applications.
Naveen Yanduru, vice president of the RF Communications, Industrial and Communications Business Unit at Renesas Electronics, said: “Mobile and fixed wireless networks are transitioning to 5G mmWave technology, both in urban and rural areas. Therefore, getting sufficient signal coverage, or Insufficient signal coverage remains the biggest challenge. Renesas’ new beamformer IC is a game-changer in this evolving market, offering a small, integrated beamforming solution with high output power, enabling communications customers to provide wide-area Wireless applications enable cost-effective base station and FWA designs.”
About the F5288 and F5268 5G mmWave Beamforming ICs
Renesas’ third-generation millimeter-wave beamformer ICs meet all beamforming functions required for 5G systems while achieving high-efficiency, ultra-linear RF output power performance based on silicon-based technology.
The new product’s dual-polarized 8-channel architecture provides a highly symmetrical and ultra-low-loss antenna routing network that improves overall antenna efficiency and saves board costs. The bare die packaging process allows for more efficient thermal management on the circuit board, improving heat dissipation from the backside of the IC. In addition, Renesas designed package pins to simplify board design, reducing design difficulty and risk. Lower-complexity PCB designs use as few layers as possible, which not only saves board costs, but also speeds time-to-market.
The F5288 and F5268 ICs also feature several cutting-edge technologies from Renesas to enhance array performance. Dynamic array power technology can present different levels of output power calmly and efficiently. ArraySense technology features a comprehensive on-chip sensor network that allows users to monitor IC performance while the array is operating and make critical corrections in real time. RapidBeam’s advanced digital control technology enables synchronous and asynchronous control of multiple beamformer ICs simultaneously, enabling ultra-fast beam steering operation.
Other product features include
Supports 26.5-29.5GHz (F5288) and 24.25-27.5GHz (F5268) frequency bands
Advanced temperature compensation technology greatly reduces the effect of RF performance degradation due to temperature changes
Leading edge phase and gain control technology, including a 360° phase control range with true 6-bit resolution and a maximum gain control of 31.5dB in 0.5dB steps
Optimized Rx linearity mode for additional flexibility in receiver chain
Rx noise figure as low as 4.5dB at room temperature and less than 5.5dB at temperatures up to 95°C
To further simplify system design, customers can take advantage of Renesas’ successful portfolio of new base station antenna front-ends featuring the new F5288 and F5268 beamformer ICs, as well as the Renesas F5728 up/down converter, 8V97003 wideband mmWave combiner, and various kinds of PMIC devices. Renesas has launched more than 250 portfolio solutions based on complementary analog, power, clock and embedded processing products for a variety of applications and end products, designed to help customers build easy-to-use architectures for different applications and simplify the design process , and significantly reduce design risk.
The F5288 and F5268 beamformer ICs are available now.
