Renesas Electronics Expands 5G mmWave Product Lineup with Beamformer with Superior Transmitter Output Power Performance

Renesas Electronics Group (TSE: 6723), a global supplier of semiconductor solutions, today announced two new dual-polarization millimeter-wave devices, the F5288 and F5268 ICs, to expand its 5G beamformer IC product family. The new products are optimized for 5G and broadband wireless applications with a 2 x 2 antenna architecture for superior performance in the n257, n258 and n261 frequency bands. The highly integrated F5288 and F5268 transmitter/receiver (8T8R) chipsets feature the industry’s highest silicon-based Tx output power in a small 5.1mm x 5.1mm BGA package—over 15.5dBm of linear output power per channel ( Note 1). Through this combination, Renesas solutions enable cost-effective radio designs that extend the signal for WAN, small cells, and macro cells, as well as wireless infrastructure for CPE, fixed wireless access (FWA) nodes, and a variety of other applications coverage.

Renesas’ third-generation millimeter-wave beamformer ICs meet all beamforming functions required for 5G systems while achieving high-efficiency, ultra-linear RF output power performance based on silicon-based technology.

The new product’s dual-polarized 8-channel architecture provides a highly symmetrical and ultra-low-loss antenna routing network that improves overall antenna efficiency and saves board costs. The bare die packaging process allows for more efficient thermal management on the circuit board, improving heat dissipation from the backside of the IC. In addition, Renesas designed package pins to simplify board design, reducing design difficulty and risk. Lower-complexity PCB designs use as few layers as possible, which not only saves board costs, but also speeds time-to-market.

The F5288 and F5268 ICs also feature several cutting-edge technologies from Renesas to enhance array performance. Dynamic array power technology can present different levels of output power calmly and efficiently. ArraySense technology features a comprehensive on-chip sensor network that allows users to monitor IC performance while the array is operating and make critical corrections in real time. RapidBeam’s advanced digital control technology enables synchronous and asynchronous control of multiple beamformer ICs simultaneously, enabling ultra-fast beam steering operation.
