Renesas and Changchun FAW Establish Joint Laboratory to Develop Electric and Autonomous Vehicle Technologies

Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics has established a joint research center in Changchun with China’s FAW Group, aiming to develop electric and autonomous vehicle technologies, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on Dec. 17.

Tomomitsu Moka, Chairman of Renesas Electronics China, said: “Renesas has established a long-term technical cooperation relationship with China’s representative independent brand FAW Group since 2006, and is the first global semiconductor solution provider to carry out technical cooperation and IP sharing with China. Solution provider. This time, I am very honored to establish a joint laboratory on the basis of long-term mutual trust and cooperation. I believe that the two sides will further deepen cooperation and jointly promote the innovation and development of China’s automotive industry technology.”

Renesas will use their expertise in high-performance automotive processors, as well as system-on-chip and software technologies in the cooperation, and the first results of cooperation between the two parties will be showcased in FAW’s flagship Hongqi car brand.

China aims to upgrade all new car sales to fully electric, hybrid or fuel cell vehicles by 2035. Renesas has been focusing on the development of the Chinese market, and last year, Renesas and SAIC Motor jointly established another research center. Half of Renesas’ revenue comes from the automotive business, whose shareholders include Toyota Motor.

In 2013, Renesas was once in financial distress, and Toyota lent a helping hand to help the company get through the difficulties.

Li Dan, Vice President of China FAW R&D Institute and President of the Intelligent Networking Development Institute, said: “FAW is committed to strengthening the independent research and development of new intelligent networked vehicles. This in-depth cooperation with Renesas, which has excellent technology accumulation, will undoubtedly help Enrich the selection space of our intelligent driving development platform, and strengthen our ability to define automobile architecture and requirements for Chinese automobile consumption scenarios. We hope that the joint laboratory will undertake the task of technical research and achievement transformation in the field of controller development, and strive to bring the ultimate to users. driving experience.”

The two parties have established a joint laboratory, based on digital chips such as Renesas RH850 MCU and R-Car SoC, as well as analog chips such as power devices and PMICs, to provide FAW with integrated product solutions that meet automotive industry standards such as functional safety and information security. And deeply participate in the joint development of the FAW Hongqi controller platform.
