New Infineon MEMS Scanner Brings Augmented Reality Applications to Glasses and Automotive Head-Up Display Systems

Infineon’s MEMS scanner chipsets with innovative tilting mirrors form the basis for a new generation of Laser Beam Scanning (LBS) projectors. Compared to other system designs and competing MEMS scanner solutions, Infineon’s new chipset stands out in terms of performance, size, power consumption and system cost competitiveness.

  Better customer experience for all car classes

A big challenge in developing an AR-HUD system is integrating the system into a dashboard where space is limited. Traditional head-up display systems can have an optical volume of over 30 liters and still provide a very limited field of view. In contrast, laser beam scanners based on Infineon’s MEMS scanner chipsets allow the optical volume of head-up display systems to be minimized so that they can be integrated into the smallest instrument clusters. In addition to easy integration and material savings, AR-HUD systems can also bring a larger field of view to small and compact cars.

  View digital information in real time with augmented reality smart glasses

Infineon MEMS scanner chipsets enable the design of lightweight augmented reality pico projectors that can be beautifully incorporated into all-day glasses and sports goggles. Due to the low power consumption of the chipset, a small battery can easily be integrated into the frame, allowing the glasses to be worn all day without the need to constantly recharge the battery.

Infineon is working with Vienna-based startup TriLite Technologies GmbH to jointly promote the development of AR smart glasses systems for the consumer market. Infineon is responsible for supplying the MEMS scanner chipset, while TriLite is responsible for system integration and control algorithms for improving the optical performance of the system. The two companies have each contributed years of optical MEMS research results and mass production capabilities.
