GSMA CEO John Hoffman said in an emailed statement that the outbreak made it “impossible” to hold the conference.

The GSMA has not responded to further related requests for comment.

A week ago, LG became the first major company to announce its withdrawal from MWC, which was scheduled to take place at the end of this month. In the days that followed, the number of companies dropping out continued to rapidly increase amid concerns that the spread of the Covid-19 virus would pose a public health risk to employees, and by the end only a few large exhibitors remained. Typically, MWC attracts more than 100,000 exhibitors from around the world.

A new pneumonia-like coronavirus was discovered in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei province, in December last year. The strain of the virus, now officially named COVID-19, has spread to about 30 countries outside China, including the United States, Japan. and Australia etc. In Spain, two cases have also been confirmed.

The GSMA has previously responded to exhibitors’ concerns with increasingly stringent measures. On Sunday, the GSMA announced that it would ban any visitors from Hubei from exhibiting. In addition, MWC will also require attendees passing through China to show proof that they have been abroad for 14 days, and said it will take several other measures to reduce the risk posed by the new crown pneumonia virus, including temperature checks and a no-handshake policy. , but these precautions are not enough to dissuade exhibiting companies from withdrawing.

The GSMA has repeatedly insisted that MWC will go ahead as planned, but finally officially announced the cancellation of the conference on Wednesday, shortly after Nokia, HMD, Deutsche Telekom and BT all pulled out.
