On December 24, 2019, Loongson Zhongke Technology Co., Ltd. held the 2019 Loongson New Product Release and User Conference with the theme of “New Era, Core Ecology” at the Beijing National Convention Center, and released Loongson’s new generation of general-purpose CPU products 3A4000/ 3B4000. More than 4,000 people, including Loongson partners, authoritative media, experts and scholars, and leaders of competent departments, witnessed the release of Loongson’s new products.

The Loongson 3A4000/3B4000 uses the same 28nm process as the previous generation 3A3000/3B3000, and the performance is doubled through design optimization. The 3A4000/3B4000 uses the latest generation processor core GS464V developed by Godson, with a main frequency of 1.8GHz-2.0GHz, and the SPEC CPU2006 fixed-point and floating-point single-core scores are over 20 points, which is more than twice that of the previous generation. By optimizing power management, the working time of the notebook based on the Loongson 3A4000 is more than double that of the previous generation. The comprehensive performance of the 3B4000 four-socket server formed by direct CPU connection is more than four times that of the previous generation product 3B3000 two-socket server, and the virtual machine efficiency has also increased from more than 85% of the previous generation product to more than 95%.

The Loongson 3A4000/3B4000 integrates a safety mechanism on-chip to achieve the unity of autonomous controllability and safety and reliability. Loongson 3A4000/3B4000 can effectively prevent vulnerabilities such as Meltdown and Spectre from the mechanism, support encryption and decryption algorithms such as MD5, AES, SHA, special security and trusted modules and national secret algorithms, and support access control mechanisms such as “shadow stack”. According to Hu Weiwu, chairman of Loongson Zhongke, the traditional CPU security mechanism only adds a secure and trusted module outside the processor core. Loongson 3A4000/3B4000 specially designed a security control mechanism in the processor core to achieve intrinsic safety.

Loongson 3A4000/3B4000, as always, emphasizes independent research and development. All functional modules in the chip, including all source codes of CPU core, on-chip interconnect bus, DDR4 memory controller and various IO interface modules, are independently designed. All custom modules in the chip, including multi-port register file, phase-locked loop, DDR4 PHY, high-speed IO interface PHY and other layouts are independently developed. Except for the basic design environment provided by tape-out manufacturers, Loongson 3A4000/3B4000 does not use any third-party IP.

Hu Weiwu pointed out in the theme report “Godson is not afraid of difficult expeditions” that since the establishment of an enterprise by the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2010, the Loongson team found that the “world advanced level” recognized by the academic circles was far from user needs. Through trial and error in the market, the Loongson team realized that the main gap between my country’s CPUs and foreign CPUs lies in general-purpose processing performance, not dedicated processing performance; the lack of single-core performance, not the number of cores; the lack of design capabilities, not the lack of cores. The technology is not advanced enough. Therefore, Loongson Zhongke has been committed to improving the general-purpose processing performance of a single core by optimizing the design, until the 3A4000 completes the “make-up lesson” of design capabilities. According to Hu Weiwu, the general processing performance of 3A4000 is comparable to that of AMD’s 28nm process final product “Excavator” processor. On this basis, Loongson will launch the quad-core 3A5000 and 16-core 3C5000 using the 12nm process in the next year and the next year. Years of hard work, the general processing performance has reached the world’s advanced level of product-level.

Hu Weiwu pointed out that the fundamental way out for my country’s information industry lies in the establishment of a third ecosystem independent of Wintel and ARM+Android systems. To this end, Loongson provides an open-source basic version of the operating system to support downstream operating system companies, machine equipment companies, and solution companies to launch product versions of the operating system. Loongson unifies the system architecture through the basic version of the operating system, realizes the compatibility of the operating system across the motherboard and the CPU generation, and realizes the compatibility of applications in different whole machine platforms. At this conference, Loongson Zhongke released a standard specification system for a unified system architecture, and established a product certification system by signing certification agreements with OEM/ODM manufacturers. From Loongson 3A4000/3B4000 onwards, Loongson CPU and motherboard upgrades will not affect the compatibility of operating systems and applications.
