The company has now shared more details of the satellite project that will support the ‘Titania Operational Concept Demonstrator’, exploring the military usefulness of Low Earth Orbit (LEO), direct-to-earth, free-space optical communications (FSOC).
They will design, build and operate the space segment of the Titania Mission to demonstrate 10 gigabits per second optical communications from orbit. In-Space, as mission prime for the spacecraft, will be working with partners Tesat-Spacecom and Bright Ascension.
The Science and Technology Facilities Council’s RAL Space will support the Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) of the Titania satellite as well as participating in the Programme and Technical Assurance Board along with Northrop Grumman.
In-Space Missions will also operate the satellite with data downlinking into the Dstl’s Optical Ground Station (OGS) named ‘Puck’.
The Titania spacecraft is due to launch in 2023 and will feature multiple payloads demonstrating and characterising high-speed free space optical uplinks and downlinks for UK Defence and Security applications.
The contract to build the satellite was awarded through the Serapis Lot 2 commercial framework, run by Dstl in collaboration with BAE Systems.
